1. Area chart

An area chart is a type of graph that displays quantitative data over time, using filled areas to represent different values. The areas between the axis and the line are commonly shaded or colored.


Use cases:

  • Tracking changes over time
  • Comparing multiple data series
  • Showing cumulative totals


Common data to use in an assessment:

  • Monthly revenue trends
  • Survey response rates over time
  • Employee attendance over months



You can also group the data by certain datapoints, such as categories or teams.



2. Stacked area chart

A stacked area chart is similar to an area chart but shows multiple data series stacked on top of each other. Each data series is represented by a different color, and the combined areas depict the total value.


Use cases:

  • Showing part-to-whole relationships over time
  • Comparing multiple categories simultaneously
  • Visualizing cumulative totals of different data series

3. 100% stacked area chart

A 100% stacked area chart is a variation of the stacked area chart where each stack represents a percentage of the total, adding up to 100% at each point in time.





4. Streamgraph

A streamgraph is a type of stacked area chart where the data is centered around a central axis, creating a flowing, organic shape. It is useful for displaying the evolution of data over time in a visually appealing manner. 


Use cases:

  • Visualizing complex data streams
  • Showing the evolution of multiple variables
  • Displaying data in an artistic, engaging way
